The GBT protocol at Alinea
GBT (Guided Biofilm Therapy) is an oral hygiene protocol developed by EMS that revolutionises the traditional approach. Based on scientific evidence, it follows 8 clinical steps that guarantee a thorough, systematic and comfortable clean. It uses cutting-edge technology such as AIRFLOW to remove biofilm, stains and tartar in a minimally invasive way. It is gentler than traditional scaling methods and provides a significantly more pleasant experience for the patient.
The importance of periodontal prevention
Prevention is the fundamental pillar of oral health. Periodontal disease affects around 50% of the adult population and is the leading cause of tooth loss in adults. Regular hygiene appointments allow problems to be detected early — from initial gingivitis to advanced periodontitis — avoiding more complex treatment later. At Alinea, we recommend hygiene appointments every 6 months, which may be more frequent (every 3-4 months) for patients with periodontal disease, implants or a greater genetic predisposition.
Alinea Smile Club
The Alinea Smile Club is our preventive oral hygiene programme with personalised annual plans. It includes regular follow-up appointments, GBT-protocol scaling, fluoride application, periodontal monitoring and discounts on additional treatments. It is the smartest way to look after the whole family’s oral health with predictability and continuous follow-up.
Home care: what we recommend
To maintain the results of professional hygiene, a good home care routine is essential. We recommend brushing with an electric or soft-bristled manual brush and fluoride toothpaste at least twice a day (a minimum of 2 minutes), daily use of floss or interdental brushes sized to fit the spaces, and mouthwash when recommended by your hygienist. Brushing technique is just as important as frequency.

Initial assessment. Assessment of oral health, gums and biofilm presence using plaque disclosing agent.
AIRFLOW. Removal of biofilm and stains with a gentle, comfortable jet of water, air and erythritol powder.
PERIOFLOW. Subgingival cleaning of periodontal pockets with a specific tip for hard-to-reach areas.
PIEZON. Removal of residual tartar with minimally invasive, low-frequency ultrasound.
Polishing and fluoride. Final polishing and application of fluoride or varnish to protect the enamel.
Personalised instructions. Guidance on brushing, flossing and interdental brushes tailored to individual needs.

How often should I have a professional clean?
We recommend a professional clean every 6 months. However, patients with periodontal disease, implants or a greater tendency to build up tartar may need more frequent appointments, every 3-4 months, as assessed by the hygienist.
Does scaling hurt?
With the GBT protocol used at Alinea, scaling is significantly more comfortable than traditional methods. AIRFLOW uses a gentle, effective jet of water, air and erythritol powder, removing the need for aggressive manual instruments.
What is included in an oral hygiene session?
A complete session includes an oral health assessment with plaque disclosing agent, biofilm removal with AIRFLOW, subgingival cleaning with PERIOFLOW, ultrasonic scaling with PIEZON when needed, polishing, fluoride application and personalised hygiene instructions.
What is the Alinea Smile Club?
The Alinea Smile Club is our oral hygiene programme with annual plans that include regular appointments, scaling, fluoride application and discounts on treatments. It is the most practical and economical way to keep oral health on track.
Should children also have professional hygiene appointments?
Yes. From age 3-4, children benefit from professional hygiene appointments adapted to their age. At Alinea Kids, sessions are playful and educational, teaching correct brushing habits from an early age.
